In our latest edition of the IWD blog post series, meet Partner to the Real Estate team, Vanessa Cassidy:

1. Why did you want to pursue a career in law?

In short, my A-levels! I always wanted to be a midwife and then at the sweet age of 16, I selected 3 A Levels, one being law (because one of my good friends had chosen it), loved it and here I am. Best decision I made and I actually really enjoy what I do, which is so important when you spend so much time at work.

2. Which women have influenced you and why (this can be someone famous through to a family member)?

My grandmothers (who are sadly no longer with us). Both were go getters, strong characters and, despite the hard times during the World Wars, were always so positive and praiseworthy. Such fond memories. I just wish they had written books about their lives as the stories they used to tell my siblings and me were extraordinary.

3. What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?

I guess it has to be qualification and being made a partner. Proud moments all round.

4. If you could be any heroine for a day (from film, TV, books or otherwise), who would it be?

Queen Elizabeth II. What an icon that lady was. So inspirational. She showed immense strength and resilience through the good and hard times. Even her short address at the beginning of the Covid pandemic inspired the nation to be stoic, steadfast and patient. There’ll never be another like her.

5. On International Women’s Day, what is the most important message you want to send out to young women starting out in their careers?

If you want to achieve something, go for it. Never let anyone make you feel you can’t or are not good enough. Always believe in yourself.
